Unmarried Couples

Unmarried couples, whether they are same sex or opposite sex, use private contracts, such as cohabitation agreements, wills, and trusts, to protect their assets. Increasingly, unmarried same sex couples are being allowed to register with government entities as domestic partnerships. This allows formal recognition of the relationship, much like a marriage certificate. Many private employers also offer domestic partners benefits, including health care, family leave, and pension benefits.
