Can I Collect Back Alimony Without A Lawyer?
Lee Borden

Q.

If my ex-husband has chosen to stop paying a court ordered alimony, what are my options without involving a lawyer? I live in the state of Georgia. What specific forms can I fill out to have his wages garnished for my alimony payment and what forms that I would fill out for being in contempt? Can I do these things without a lawyer? He has not paid for several months.

What you're describing is an enforcement petition, and you may be able to find the forms to use by entering "[Your State] enforcement petition" in your search engine. You may be better off hiring a lawyer, however. If you lay the proper groundwork by sending your Ex a specific demand letter before filing, you are likely to be able have him held in contempt of court, which in most states opens the door for the court to require him to pay your attorney fees.
