Can I Go Back And Collect Child Support?
Lee Borden

Q.

My question deals with child support. I was ordered by the court to receive $692.00 a month for child support. My ex-spouse only paid $600.00 per month for about 15 years, stating he couldn't afford $692.00. Is it possible for me to get the back child support at this point in time?

A.

You betcha. Whether you can recover all 15 years will depend on your state's statute for delinquency. Many states, for example, allow collection on an installment for up to 20 years after that installment is due, while others set it at 10 years. Check with child services in your state; they'll be able to tell you quickly what rule applies to you, and the call should be free.
