How Can I Get Divorce Started With No Money?
Lee Borden

Q.

I need to get a divorce after 16 years of being a housewife. My spouse & I are still in the same household. He is verbally abusive. He took all available cash out of the bank; I have NO c/c, no cash and no assets. He is the only one with access to money. I was advised of a FLARPL, but don't have $1,500.00 to start it. I can't divorce without an attorney as my spouse is unreasonable and volatile. I have 3 dependent children. Where can I get help?

A.

I don't know what a FLARPL is, but I do know that what you need is a temporary support order. Child services in your state will set up child support for you, which should be all you need to get a little bit of a grubstake together to get started. Once you are able to pay a lawyer enough to get started, ask the lawyer to file for more comprehensive temporary orders, including child custody, support, spousal support, and medical insurance.
